The Sony Webbie: HD Video is Going Small

Over a year ago, Pure Digital came up with a revolutionary product Flip Video.  For people like me who do not really have the time to get into the details of video editing, the YouTube generation who want to shoot video and upload it for sharing with the world wide web.  Back then the Flip Video had a few competitors, mostly companies who sell low-cost camcorders like they do - now the high-end manufacturers have taken notice.

Sony is launching this HD camcorder called a Webbie in the Spring of 2009.  It's small.  It saves to a memory stick so it's easy to upload videos.  It shoots HD video.  It has 5x optical zoom and 20x digital - I think this aspect is where small camcorders should improve their products.  More zoom power please!  It can shoot stills as well - yey, great for those self-photos or self-videos for that matter.  The Webbie is probably inspired by the popularity of the Flip Video camcorder (which I still love).  We have to wait until spring to find out if it shoots Sony quality videos as well.

HD Video is going small - HD Video is going to the masses.  The huge professional HD video camcorders that cost around $5000 or so used to be out of reach to amateurs and hobbyists - the Sony Webbie only costs $199.  Is that a deal or what?  So go forth and produce more user-generated content - go into the age of entertainment by the masses...

Thanks for such a great little product, Sony.  Good job on this one!
